WJC Players to Watch: Martin Marincin
Another favourite of mine if you look back at this year's posts regarding the 2010 CHL Import Draft, Marincin is going to be the key player for Team Slovakia to have any shot at succeeding in this tournament.
In 33 games this season for the Prince George Cougars the 6'4" defenceman has 10 goals and 25 assists, numbers which put him second in team scoring - only behind #6 overall pick in the 2010 NHL draft and Team Canada forward, Brett Connolly.
Marincin's numbers go behind his point totals, however, racking up 37 PIMs and a +6 rating while playing against the opposing team's top players. From watching last year's tournament, one can also see that he isn't afraid to step up and make a big hit in order to get his team going.
Marincin should see a huge number of minutes in this tournament for Slovakia, but I can't say I like the team's chances so Marincin's production may suffer. Either way, Marincin should see a bulk of the team's PP time on defence, so he should be playing with some dynamic offensive players such as Richard Panik, Tomas Jurco and Andrej Stastny.
